Running for: Undergraduate CLGP Representative
Hi everyone! I am super excited to let you know that I’m running to be a college of law rep with RAGE for ANUSA I’m a first year PPE and law student, from Perth and BNG ressie, I’m running because I’ve seen the impact the cuts have had on students and staff.I am running as I would like to make law at ANU a more inclusive environment for all.
My policies include…
Making textbooks more accessible to students
The extortionate price of law textbooks creates unnecessary barriers to education, I believe everyone is entitled to a fair education and cost should not prevent students from getting the education they deserve, however with the requirement to buy textbooks costing over 200$ a semester
Actionable point - I think we could allocate some of the law budget into buying textbooks both online and in person. Furthermore I think it would be beneficial to implement some sort of equity program to allow lower income students a better chance at getting textbooks lent to them as it now operates on a first come first served basis.
Including all states and territories into the curriculum (not just the east coast)
As someone from perth I often find it frustrating that the curriculum seems to only focus on NSW ACT and VIC when a large minority of students come from the other states and wish to return home to practice law
Actionable point - meet with professors to discuss spaces where reference to other states would be appropriate to add into the slides and coursework.
Mandatory content warnings for distressing topics
law often covers difficult topics such as the unfair discrimination of Indigenous Australians and the persecution of other minority groups in society. This is an issue as these topics can be extremely distressing and triggering to members of my cohort.
Actionable point - meet with course convenors to implement mandatory content warnings and edit previous content including powerpoints to include content warnings.
Moving from pre-recorded back to face to face lectures.
Many students have struggled with the move from face-to-face to prerecorded lectures as it can be harder to focus, there can be issues with the lecture and as many students have moved for an education pre-recorded lectures can feel frustrating as it feels like you’re doing your degree from your room.
Actionable point - meet with course convenors to discuss how we can move back to face to face lectures (with echo recordings)
